The Caraval series by Stephanie Garber is a young adult fantasy trilogy about two sisters who participate in a magical competition: 

Caraval: The first book in the series, Caraval follows Scarlett Dragna and her sister Tella as they attend a mysterious, once-a-year game called Caraval. Scarlett has dreamed of participating in Caraval since she was a child, but her father has arranged a marriage for her. When Scarlett receives an invitation to Caraval, Tella whisks her away to attend with the help of a mysterious sailor. However, Tella is kidnapped by the game’s organizer, Legend, and Scarlett must find her before the five nights of the game are over.
